What are processed foods? (6)

A processed food is any food that has been modified in some way during its preparation.

This treatment may be chilling, canning, baking, drying, dehydration or sterilisation-disinfection.

Processed foods are not just prepared meals and not all processed foods are unhealthy.

Some foods need to be processed to make them safe, such as milk, which needs to be pasteurised to remove harmful bacteria.

Processed foods are more convenient foods. However, convenience is not the only thing that processed foods offer.

Others are colour, stabilisers, emulsifiers, preservatives, sweeteners, odour masking and flavour enhancement.
